Here is a proposed plan for protecting the elections including a shutdown if necessary.

Daily protests during the two-week shutdown.

Nonviolent direct actions with varying degrees of risk. We do not harm human beings or other living beings. We do not damage property. We know our nonviolent sacrifice will reach out to the undecided.

Mutual aid for childcare centers, food distributions, and possible financial aid.

Grow community with tabling events, volunteer outreach, one-on-one relational outreach; as well as Noncooperation and Nonviolence trainings to help implement a local shutdown.
SChoOLs
Tucson teachers, parents and students shut down 20 schools on January 30, 2026 in response to the call from MN. We want 50 this time!
With the grassroots involvement of individual teachers, shut down all of the high schools in TUSD and some in surrounding Districts and a large number of the other schools in both TUSD and other Districts with a group of teachers, parents and students in each school in touch with peers in other schools and with our coalition. Teachers organizations are not legally allowed to support a strike or shutdown.
BUSINESSES
50 shutdown in Jan 2026. Recruit 100 small to medium businesses to shut down. Some will sign an initial pledge to oppose cancellation of the mid-terms.
WORKPLACES
With the grassroots involvement of individual workers in unionized and non-unionized workplaces, seek to shut larger businesses down or slow them down for a number of days.
WORKErS
Using individual outreach and social media, get 5,000 workers to stay home from work for a number of days, for as long as makes sense given their circumstances.
Faith
Working with the faith community enlist at least 20 Congregations to endorse a shutdown, mobilizing their members; providing mutual aid to their members and others affected by the Shutdown and get 5,000 individual, faith-based signers to the general pledge.
Community
Community organizations, with help from consulting organizations, will mobilize activists in Tucson. Together they will identify and train leaders who will in turn identify new leaders using one-on-one, relational techniques. Our initial overall goal is 5,000 signers of a Shutdown Pledge. In addition, we will reach out to people who sign the pledge to get more involved. We will use small house parties to develop neighborhood “Shutdown Support Committees.”
NO BIG BUSINESSES / CORPORATE INTERESTS
Avoid big box stores, restaurant chains, franchises, grocery stores, major brands, and super corporations. We will focus on those targeted nationally.
SUPPORT THE BUSINESSES THAT HAVE PLEDGED TO SHUT DOWN
Buy local, shop small and support businesses that are aligned with the Tucson Shutdown movement. As we reach out to individual business, we will list the supportive businesses here. Please do your shopping with them now! And in the future.
