Can Trump cancel the midterms?

Trump has been quoted as saying, “When you think of it, we shouldn’t even have an election.” Although he cannot legally cancel the election, Trump has no regard for the Constitution and has rarely been held accountable when he has ignored the law. Trump and his allies can and will attempt to disrupt the election process in a variety of ways, seeking to disenfranchise millions of voters and throw our nation into the greatest constitutional crisis in our history, all while maintaining power indefinitely. The regime has already demanded state voter rolls be handed over to the DOJ. Federal agencies that would help secure the election results have been gutted. Trump’s Executive Order interfering with mail-in voting could have disenfranchised almost 80% of Arizona’s voters. We can expect more of the same going forward.

The May Day Strong coalition has pledged to shutdown economic activity if any of the following “red lines” are crossed.

  • Seizure of ballot boxes before they are counted
  • Deployment of ICE and/or military to the polls to prevent people from voting
  • Federal agents, such as militia members, at the polls preventing people from voting
  • Complete cessation of vote counting for any reason
  • Non-transparent counting or certification processes
  • The arbitrary tossing out of valid votes
  • Refusal to seat legally elected leaders
  • Severe state or opposition escalation, such as the large-scale arrest of movement leaders or the murder of activists

Our goal:

Mobilize 35,000 Southern Arizonans to sign the pledge and participate in the shutdown if the midterms are undermined.

The Tucson metro area is home to 1.09 million people. Research shows that significant social change occurs when 3.5% of a community engages in continuous, nonviolent disruption.

TUCSON SHUTDOWN

Like many other cities, Tucson will disrupt economic activity as part of the national shutdown. Tucson is represented in the May Day Strong coalition and will have a voice in deciding when to initiate the shutdown. There is a real danger that the big NGOs might hesitate to call for a shutdown even when one is necessary. 

The grassroots will decide!
